Using PLU Codes to Identify Produce

Price Look-Up codes, commonly known as PLU codes, are used by retail stores to identify and manage bulk produce inventory. PLU codes are most often found on a small sticker placed directly on fresh produce when traditional bar codes are not practical. The code identifies the variety and growing method for each item, and may also indicate the size (e.g. small, medium, large).

This form of product identification can help consumers identify some basic traits about the fresh produce they purchase, including whether an item was grown conventionally, organically, or if an item has been genetically modified.

Quick Guide to PLU Codes

  • A four digit code that starts with a 3 or 4 indicates conventionally grown fruit
  • A five digit code that starts with a 9 indicates the produce is organic
  • A five digit code that starts with an 8 indicates the produce has been genetically modified

Originally introduced in North America in 1990, PLU codes can now be found in Australia, New Zealand and some countries in Europe.  For more information, see the official user guide from the International Federation for Produce Standards.
